Cotton Barrier Masks

We have had many requests for cotton version of our Spunbond Masks. So, here is a pack of two barrier masks, cut from our original pattern, and made of two layers of closely woven, white Cotton Poplin.  The cotton is reinforced with a layer of Nonwoven Recycled Polyester fusible inside.  Current research shows that a mix of materials - including synthetics and nonwovens - provide better protection.

Our mask design fits snugly to the face with no gaps. features a bendable wire nose piece that can be formed to the bridge of your nose, a decorative contrast binding around the edges, and elastic to stretch comfortably around the back of your neck and head.  As there are shortages of all these materials at the moment, your purchase may feature different colour bindings or elastics from the photograph.  We will endeavour to include two different colors in each pack.

We are not scientists!  But current research says that COVID-19 remains on fabric surfaces for 48-72 hours.  To disinfect, pour a kettle of boiled water over them and the wash gently by hand, or iron at high temperature.  We have a Spunbond Polypropylene version of this mask available here.

NON PROFIT MASK MAKING PROJECT

We are organising volunteers to make 20,000 barrier masks to be donated to frontline workers during the lockdown.  

If you are a sewer or craftsperson, have access to a sewing machine, and fancy helping out - Please send us your name, address and phone number on Instagram @edelinelee or via email to masks@edelinelee.com.  We will post to you a mask-making kit to make 50 masks in your home.  Post the finished masks back within one week, and we will be distributing them to frontline workers en masse.

Everyone that is working on this project has donated their time.  The photographs for this project have been shot in isolation at home by teams who happen to live together:  Dima & Ariel Hohlov shot the photos on this page, Rosie Vogel & Matthew Eades shot the photos on our Instagram, and Alena Dedova & Alex Bramall have shot the photos on the home page.  They were styled via Zoom by Katie Felstead.  The materials have been cut and prepared in Edeline and her studio assistants' households, and the masks have been stitched by volunteers in their homes.  Tom Burke has edited the videos from his isolated cabin in Cornwall.

UPDATE - May 2, 2020: We've now been working on this project for almost 4 weeks, and within the next few days, we will have reached our first goal of 10,000 masks sent out to volunteers!  These are being sewn all over the UK by wonderful and generous volunteers, and we are looking forward to starting to distribute these as they come back to us.  Please let us know if you know of an organisation in need.  We continue to search for more home sewers to help us reach the goal of 20,000 masks to donate to frontline workers during this lockdown!  Please email us if you'd like to help.

UPDATE - May 12, 2020:  10,500 masks are now being sewn all around the UK by volunteer home sewers.  We also have now finished raising the money to cover the material costs of our volunteer-made masks!  100% of the proceeds from the first five weeks of sales of these masks as well as a GoFundMe campaign was used to raise money for our project.  Each purchase covered the material costs of a further 80 volunteer-made masks to be donated to frontline workers.  Thank you for your support of this project.

We will now be closing down our GoFundMe and reverting the mask sales on our website to a normal product and future sales of the retail masks will no longer be worked on by volunteers.  After Boris's speech on Sunday, over the next few weeks, we will be working towards opening up our studio again bit by bit.  For those of you who will purchase these masks in the future, thank you for helping to get our people slowly and surely back in work.

UPDATE - May 30, 2020:  We are now at 14,150 masks being stitched by volunteer sewers!  

UPDATE - June 29, 2020:  At this point, we have sent out kits for 15,500 masks - a lot of which have already been sent back to us.  We have quality controlled them, packaged them, and donated to the following institutions so far (with the kind shipping help of Freight Brokers):   Warwick House Residential Home, King's College Hospital, Wellchild, Southampton Coronavirus Mutual Aid Group, Elizabeth House, Kingston Hospital NHS Trust Foundation, Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital NHS. 

Home sewers - we will continue to keep sending out kits until we reach our goal of 20,000 masks to donate, and will continue for even longer than that if we can - as long as our supplies hold out, and as long as there are people willing to help out.  Please contact us for a kit!
